Many people look at the price on a good quality women’s sex toy and their eyes widen and they say, “how much is that vibrator, you must be kidding?” Well, there are some products that you get what you pay for and this is one of those items. Many factors separate the high end and low end vibrators, the most important being; longevity, product materials, engineering and design, and eco friendliness. Let me elaborate.
Are you aware that many lower end women’s vibrators are designed to last only a few months? Yes, just a few months. So let’s look at this fact from a purely conservative monetary perspective. Say you purchase a vibrator for $30 and it lasts 6 months. That equates to $5 per month. Let’s even be super generous and say it lasts for a full year, 12 months. That gives us a figure of $2.50 a month. Then you need to buy a new vibrator.
Most higher end vibrators come with a full year guarantee, some with a 5 year, and many with an additional partial replacement guarantee for 5 -10 years. Yes, high quality vibrators are made to last a very long time. I personally have had some for over the 10 year mark and they are still going strong with regular use. Now let’s say you purchase one of these high quality vibrators for $100 and it lasts 5 years. That is 60 months or $1.67 per month.
As you can see, what looked at first glance to be an exorbitant price, $100 for a women’s vibrator, actually ended up being a much more economical option than the cheaper price tag vibrator. Here is the math comparison:
High Quality Vibrator initial cost: $100, 60 months use = $1.67 per month
Lower Quality Vibrator initial cost: $30, 6 months of use = $5.00 per month or
12 months of use = $2.50 per month
Most high end vibrators use body healthy materials with no phthalates or phthalate blends, such as 100% medical grade silicone, elastomers, or hard plastic. These materials are considered body safe because they are inert. They do not react with the body, nor do they leach out of the products into the body.
Most low end vibrators use some form of phthalates because they are a much cheaper material, either in a polyvinyl chloride, jelly, or silicone blend. Unfortunately, these phthalates (chemical plasticizers) are strongly suspected of having major adverse effects on humans and their offspring and they are easily leached out of products and absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes. Phthalates are being phased out of many products all over the world due to these health concerns. The sex toy industry, not being one directly regulated, is left to its own conscious as to the product materials they use.
Considering your health and the health of your children, the materials used should be a major factor when shopping for a vibrator. Look for the products that clearly state the materials used so you can make and informed decision.
Engineering / Design
A good quality vibrator is engineered to last as we discussed earlier in this article. But, it is also designed to be user friendly and ergonomically appropriate. No one wants to use a vibrator that you need to study a manual to operate. Nor one where the controls are hard to reach.
Likewise, a good vibrator should have a physical design appropriate for its intended use. Seems logical, but you might be surprised what a contortionist you would need to be to use some ill designed vibrators.
Lastly, a few good companies of high end vibrators are jumping into the green scene and updating their manufacturing to be as green as possible. Many are also creating rechargeable vibrators eliminating the need for batteries. Next time you are in the market for a vibrator please consider all aspects when looking at a price tag.
